Spring is approaching, and it’s time to start looking ahead to the 2020 hurricane season.
It may seem early to start preparing for hurricane season, but experts have made it clear that the earlier you start preparing, the better. The season starts June 1 and it is the most active in August and September.
Here in Southwest Florida, we’ve seen how sometimes by the time you know that a hurricane is coming, it’s too late – gas stations run out of gas and grocery store shelves are often found empty.
Knowing hurricane season is coming, if you are in Southwest Florida or another vulnerable area, it’s a good idea to start preparing so when a storm is announced you are ready to go.
One of the most essential parts of hurricane preparation is installing a home generator. Here’s more about that, and other useful tips for hurricane preparedness in Southwest Florida.
Develop a Family Emergency Plan
We recommend developing a family emergency plan so, in the event of an emergency, all your family is on the same page about how you’ll get in touch with each other, where you’ll meet, and what you’ll do.
Make sure you write down important information like family social security numbers, medical information, important phone numbers, addresses, and anything else that could be useful to you and make sure everyone in your family has a copy. Establish a safe meeting place where you plan to find each other if necessary. FEMA has a great template you can use for your family emergency plan here.
Have All Your Essentials Ready
In the event of a hurricane, you may have to evacuate your home in a hurry, or you may be stuck inside your home for several days. Either way, it’s important to stock up on essential supplies and have them ready in your home or to take with you.
Create a kit that’s easy to transport in a duffel bag or small suitcase. We recommend including a flashlight, battery-powered radio, battery-powered clock, extra batteries, first aid kit, cash, any medications, toiletries, and any other essential items your family may need. Be sure to also stock up on bottled water and non-perishable foods.
Get Your Home Generator Installed
Most importantly, a home generator will keep your home powered up and safe throughout the hurricane season. Many of the inconveniences caused by extreme weather have to do with power outages so you will get ahead of many problems by installing a home generator.
As soon as the power goes out, your Kohler generator’s automatic transfer switch (ATS) will transfer your power from your home’s utility system to the generator. This will keep everything – your lights, your water system, your appliances – running through the storm.
If you are interested in installing a home generator to help you through hurricane season – don’t wait. The generator installation process can take some time. Your home must be evaluated, get permits, size the right generator, and then installation. Just getting permits can sometimes take 3 – 6 weeks – so if you want to have your generator ready by August – you need to act quickly!
